Angkor Wat Entrance Tickets: Everything You Need to Know

Angkor Wat is Cambodia’s most famous landmark and a bucket-list destination for travelers from around the world. As the largest religious monument on the planet, it’s the highlight of the sprawling Angkor Archaeological Park, which covers hundreds of ancient temples and ruins spread across a vast jungle landscape. If you’re planning to visit, understanding how the entrance tickets work is essential. This guide covers everything you need to know, from how much the Angkor Wat entrance ticket costs and where to buy one, to what’s included and what’s not.

What is Angkor Wat?

Angkor Wat was built in the early 12th century by King Suryavarman II as a Hindu temple dedicated to Vishnu before later transitioning into a Buddhist site. It’s the most well-known structure within the Angkor Archaeological Park, but the entire park is home to dozens of other temples, including Bayon temple, known for its giant stone faces, and Ta Prohm, famous for its jungle-covered ruins. The nearby town of Siem Reap serves as the gateway to Angkor, offering a range of hotels, restaurants, and nightlife options for visitors.

If you don’t already know about Angkor Wat, it’s a miracle you’ve ended up on our site! Nevertheless, we’re glad you’re here and hope you have an amazing time visiting one of the most breathtaking sites in the world.

Why do I have to pay for an Angkor Wat entrance ticket? Where does the money go?

Angkor Wat is part of the Angkor Archaeological Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that requires constant maintenance, restoration, and conservation. The entrance fee helps fund these efforts, ensuring the temples are preserved for future generations. In addition to this, ticket revenue supports infrastructure, visitor facilities, and the local economy by providing jobs in tourism, security, and heritage management. Tourism is the biggest sector of business in Siem Reap, and every visitor that comes to town in order to see the Angkor Wat temples helps contribute to the local economy.

The revenue from Angkor Wat entrance tickets is managed by Angkor Enterprise, a government agency under Cambodia’s Ministry of Economy and Finance. Angkor Enterprise is responsible for collecting and distributing ticket fees to support conservation, tourism management, and local development.

A significant portion of the funds goes to APSARA Authority, the organization responsible for maintaining and preserving the Angkor Archaeological Park. This includes restoration projects, environmental protection, and infrastructure improvements. Some revenue also contributes to community projects, supporting local livelihoods and public services in Siem Reap. Additionally, a small percentage is allocated to international conservation partnerships and heritage organizations.

$2 from every ticket is donated to the Kantha Bopha Children’s Hospital.

While some may question the cost, the fee is essential for protecting this historic site from the impact of millions of visitors each year and making sure that people will continue to be able to visit the site.

How do I buy my Angkor Wat entrance ticket?

Tickets can be purchased in a few different ways:

Official Ticket Counter – The main Angkor Ticket Office is located on the road to Angkor Wat, a few kilometers outside Siem Reap. It’s open from 5:00 AM to 5:30 PM.
Online via the Official Website – Visitors can now buy tickets in advance through the official online platform, which is a convenient option for those wanting to avoid the queues. Check the bottom of this article for a link to the official website, and avoid scam websites who might try and charge you unnecesary fees! They also have an app.
Through Tour Operators – Some hotels and travel agencies offer ticket-buying services, often bundled with transportation and guided tours.

You can also now buy tickets at the self service machines located at Heritage Walk – A shopping mall in Siem Reap located near the Royal Gardens. CLICK HERE for a map to their location.

The Angkor Wat entrance ticket and Angkor Wat Pass can be purchased with cash or credit card.

Tickets are issued with a photo of the visitor and must be carried at all times during temple visits, as officials frequently check them at entrances. If you purchase it online, this will be in the form of a digital ticket which you can save to your phone to be presented when it’s requested. Tickets are no longer checked at the entrances to the Angkor Archaelogical Park, and are instead now checked at the entrance to individual temples.

What does my Angkor Wat entrance ticket include?

Your Angkor Wat entrance ticket grants access to:

– Angkor Wat itself, including sunrise and sunset visits
– Other major temples within the Angkor Archaeological Park, such as Bayon, Ta Prohm, Preah Khan, and Banteay Kdei
– Lesser-known temples and ruins spread throughout the park such as the Terrace Of The Elephants
– Multiple entries on the same day (for breaks or meals in between sightseeing)

What’s not included in the Angkor Wat entrance ticket?

While the Angkor Archaeological Pass gives access to many incredible sites, there are some things the Angkor Wat entrance ticket does not cover:

Beng Mealea and Koh Ker – These temples are located outside the main park and require separate tickets.

Guided Tours – If you want a tour guide to explain the history and significance of the temples, you’ll need to hire one separately. You can either book a tour guide in advance, or hire one of the officially trained and registered tour guides which can be found at the Angkor Wat entrance.

Transport – Getting around the Angkor complex requires a tuk-tuk, bicycle, motorbike, or private car, all of which of course come at an additional cost.

Phnom Kulen National Park and Tonlé Sap Floating Villages – These popular attractions near Siem Reap are not part of the Angkor Wat entrance ticket and have their own entrance fees.

When is the best time to visit Angkor Wat and are there any top tips?

The best time to visit Angkor Wat will all depend on what kind of experience you’re looking to have! If you’re not afraid of a possibly rainy afternoon during off season, you can avoid the crowds that can be at Angkor Wat during high season! Check out our article – “When is the best time to visit Cambodia?”

Sunrise vs Sunset – Many travelers opt for the sunrise experience at Angkor Wat, but this is also usually the most crowded time. Sunset visits offer fewer crowds with similarly stunning views

Avoid the Midday Heat – Mornings and late afternoons are the best times to explore, as the midday heat can be intense, especially from March to May. If you’ve purchased a multi-day pass Angkor Wat entrance ticket, consider spreading out your visits over multiple days so you can avoid the searing heat and get the most enjoyment out of your visit to Angkor Wat.

Plan Your Days – If you’re staying in Siem Reap for more than one day, the 3-day pass offers better value and allows for a more relaxed visit without rushing through the temples.

Keep Your Ticket Safe – Losing your Angkor Wat entrance ticket means you’ll need to buy a new one, so store it securely. Unless of course you purchased your ticket digitally, in which case you’d only lose it if you lost your phone – and that would doubly suck!

Visiting Angkor Wat is an unforgettable experience, and understanding how the entrance tickets work will help you make the most of your trip. Whether you’re exploring the iconic towers of Angkor Wat, wandering through the mystical ruins of Ta Prohm, or admiring the intricate carvings at Banteay Srei, the temples of Angkor are a journey into Cambodia’s rich history. With the right ticket in hand, all that’s left is to explore, marvel, and soak in the beauty of this ancient wonder!
